:: Gloucester Sea Monster ::

Cape Ann Museum

    This Spring, we were so fortunate to have the Cape Ann Museum visit fourth graders at all three elementary schools for an in-school field trip! The theme this year was the Gloucester Sea Serpent and the Friends of the Arts generously sponsored the trip again this year. We really appreciate their support of the elementary art program and the arts in Hamilton Wenham!

    Museum educator, Cathy Kelley visited the six fourth grade classes with a presentation about primary sources, local sea monster lore, historical art from the area, and a scratch board art activity. Students read the real eyewitness accounts from the summer of 1817 and hypothesized if the Gloucester serpent truly existed. Then, they paired up to sketch their version of the sea creature and finished by creating a scratch art drawing that they took home. It was a fun and interesting event! I learned a lot about the legend and local art.

    Thank you to everyone who helped make this program happen! We really appreciate Cathy Kelley and all the hard work she does to bring Hamilton Wenham students this special event each year.
