Virginia Lee Burton's

The Little House & The Folly Cove Designers

It has been fun studying the life and art of Virginia Lee Burton! After reading Burton's storybooks, students were introduced to her life and the Folly Cove Designers through a wonderful educational kit from the Cape Ann Museum.  It contained books, art, a dvd on her life, a map of Gloucester, a printmaking kit that included linoleum from WW 2, and lots of information about the Folly Cove Designers.  It was an excellent resource to engage students and teach them about local art from Cape Ann.

Second grade students focused on her book, The Little House, with a weaving and drawing project.  They weaved paper and designed a unique landscape for their own "Little House".

Fourth grade students used the artwork of the Folly Cove Designers to inspire their printmaking project.  Like the Folly Cove Designers, each student created 3 foam stamps based on something from their lives and made a design template after viewing the original artworks.  Next, they printed with the stamps using repetition to make a unified, colorful design.  Now, they have a unique artwork and fun stamps to use at home!

Visit the Cape Ann Museum to learn more about Virginia Lee Burton and The Folly Cove Designers.  They have an interactive model of the Little House in their children's room and lots of educational resources on their website.
