BATIK ART
Last week, students in grades 2nd, 3rd and 5th finish their Batiks by painting them with Acrylic paint. This was a three step process starting with a drawing, adding a glue resist to the outlines and finally, with painting. The students choose what
subject to use along with the color theme.
It was a good way for me to get to know each student. When Cutler Elementary is done with their
Batiks in mid-October, I will put up a few from each school in a display at the
Hamilton Wenham Public Library.

In the beginning of October,
the 5th grade will participate in the Wenham 375 T-Shirt Design
Contest. They have been invite to submit designs by the Wenham 375 Event
Committee. For Halloween, we will be creating Skeleton Retablos from found
objects.

During the month of October,
we will be working on drawing from life using a fall theme. I would like to teach the students how to
draw what they see and how to notice the details in objects. Students will also, practice overlapping and
underlapping to design a complete composition. We will practice color mixing by using the
color wheel and complementary colors to create neutrals, a skill they already
started with the batiks.

During the month of October,
we will be working on drawing the figure by breaking it down into shapes using
a wooden model. Next, the students will become the models for the class when we
do quick gesture drawings. The lesson will end with a Halloween twist by using
the complete skeleton to create a compelling composition. We will learn the few
names of bones when creating the composition.
Mrs. Twss:
This week, we finished our
handprint and name signs for our portfolios that will go home during Open House
in March. For the past few weeks, the students have been practicing and showing
me their drawing, tracing, cutting, pasting, painting, and coloring skills.
They made picture of their families and constructed a 2D paper house.
During October, we will be
focusing on lessons with themes from Fall and Halloween. Recently the 3rd grade teachers, introduced
the staff to a book called the Beautiful Opps. It is about fixing your “mistakes” in Art and
turning them into a new design. It goes well
with our “Made a Mistake?” poster and helps teach students about being
creative. We will read this in class and
talk about its meaning. I have a lot of books to share with Kindergarten this
year including a few in Spanish.
Thank you for reading the blog!
